Look for a new OS host better than Windows?

Otherwise, I've seen a lot of people recommend Arch linux

I worked on Arch Linux, and let's just say it's not for beginners.. Not that I would not recommend it, but as I can tell, OP had been using Windows until now. For first Linux distro, I would honestly recommend Ubuntu, it has very good online support and forums and it is easy to install.

I suggest Ubuntu GNU/Linux. It's a very good distribution for beginners, but if you play around with it long enough you'll become quite advanced in using it. If you're looking for programming tools, many IDEs are supported on Ubuntu. Or you could use purely vim and gcc, whatever workflow works for you.
