Agree'd with Ash. . . .

Just find a new cheap HDD or SDD, replace your old harddrive, and put old harddrive safely away on the shelf. Physically install the new HDD, and then install fedora or arch linux on that, now you have a nice functioning system. Force yourself to use linux and you will gain mad skills, and your old data will be safe on the old harddrive.
