Has any one succeeded in running a tunnel on RPi Zero?

I got a free box of Raspberry Pi Zero chips recently. They are very nice little chips but with limited power. The port settings on it iare super versatile. I want to run network tunnels on them to receive some commands. Could be simple SSH, or reverse proxy, or VPN. Has any one succeeded in such a project? What Linux distro do you use? What tunnel is most suitable for a low power embedded system?
