It depends. If you're day trading, then you'll probably be leaving the majority on an exchange. If you're just holding, then use a hardware wallet and avoid leaving anything on an exchange. A wallet app that's open source should be fine too, but a bit less secure. Just remember that unless you control the keys, you don't own the crypto.

depends what you are using it for, coinbase is pretty good
