Blackhats vs Whitehats

The one billion dollar question... blackhat or whitehat?

The term "white, grey & black hat" comes from old spaghetti westerns, where the bad guy wears a black cowboy hat, and the good guy wears a white hat. Hacking itself is not an illegal activity unless the hacker is compromising a system without the owner’s permission.

For those of you unfamiliar with the jargon...
- A black hat hacker usually has extensive knowledge about breaking into computer networks and bypassing security protocols. Their primary motivation is usually for personal or financial gain, but they can also be involved in cyber espionage, protest or perhaps are just addicted to the thrill of cybercrime.

- White hat hackers instead choose to use their powers for good rather than evil. Also known as “ethical hackers,” white hat hackers can sometimes be paid employees or contractors working for companies as security specialists that attempt to find security holes via hacking.

Although crypto is still the wild west... there are as many risks as there are opportunities. From the looks of it, many blackhats are turning to whitehats, for a simple reason: while they disclose vulnerabilities (and get paid), blackhats are shunned as criminals who get no status, no opportunities as a result of their hacks, and are often doxed and pursued endlessly by legal authorities and users.

This interesting article by Immunefi further explores why it’s becoming better everyday to just disclose a vulnerabilty, rather than run the exploit with malicious intents and try to get away with the funds. The reasons stated there are various: legal, safety, status... and profits.

Has anyone here ever turned from black to white (and vice-versa)?

I turned from a white hat to a black hat because it's just not worth it to work with companys, almost all of them are retarded as fuck and wouldn't pay me because they just didn't like to.

Fuck them if I find an exploit you can expect me to sell it to some fellow raidforums users or creepy guys on dread.

Which companies did you work for? Did you report the vulnerabilities through some platforms?

I have never worked for a company but I have always reported the bugs/exploits and made a deal with them for 2k for example but after I have sent the exploit they just don't respond.

Luckily it only happened twice before I stopped reporting bugs (;

Which report platform did you use for this? Genuinely interested to know more about this fucked up situation...

I didn't use a report platform which was my mistake, I just sent them emails and btw I don't have these emails anymore because I used a costum smtp server which doesn't exist anymore and I never saved the mails.

Got it. I've been using Immunefi to report DeFi vulnerabilities and everything always went really smoothly. It's sad to hear that without a platform backing you up, companies pull the rug that easily...

this is true. companies are often run by retarded boomers who know nothing about technology and are greedy as fuck. if they dont have a hackerone or a bug bounty program, dont even bother reporting the bugs, because more often than not they wont pay u shit & sometimes they wont even patch a super critical bug thats right in front of their faces. companies like that deserve whatevers coming to them

Sad but true. If you want to report a vulnerability, always do so through a bug bounty to maximize your chances to get paid a fair amount!

depends on the bug. some bugs are better off being sold on the black market
