Do you want to do web development or desktop delevepment? If you are looking into web, PHP is a good choice. Desktop - maybe c#

JS for web and native apps, Python for Data/ML, C/C++ Microcontrollers, C# for windows desktop or gaming applications.

Everything depends on the use case.

And he is right for web development. PHP is kind of old and web apps of today tends to be more dynamique and make the necessity of using a javascript ( Or typescript ) framework for front end (I mean php can't handle virtual/ghost dom).
Angular, React or Vue are the best starting points for this use.

Plus I would chose to learn at least one database language.
